ADJUSTING GAS STOVE BURNERS FOR MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY
STOVE PROBLEM: The flame on one of the stove burners of your gas range has changed color.
A gas stove normally gives off blue flame. A yellow flame indicates that a stove burner is not functioning properly. A yellow flame also burns cooler than a blue flame, so food will take longer to cook. One of two stove malfunctions will cause a stove burner to show a yellow flame: either the ports of the stove burner are clogged by food that has spilled onto the burner, or the air control shutter needs adjustment.
To restore a stove burner to peak efficiency, do the following:
I. Remove the affected burner from the stove by pulling it from its place, and wash it in soapy water
2. There are a series of tiny holes, called ports, around the base of the stove burner. Use a toothpick to loosen and remove food deposits that may be clogging these ports.
3. Let the stove burner dry fully before placing it back into the range. Turn on the stove. If the flame is still yellow, adjust the air-control shutter as follows:
a. Turn the stove burner control to High.
b. Loosen the air-control shutter screw.
c. Slide the air-control shutter in one direction and then in the other, until the flame turns blue.
d. Tighten the air-control shutter screw.
4. With the stove burner control still on high, place a pan containing a little water onto the burner and check the height of the flame. It should end just below the bottom of the pan, no more than 1/s inch away. If the flame touches the pan, it means receptacles placed oil thestove burner with the burner control on high can be scorched and food will burn. Conversely, if the length of the flame is too short, food will take longer to cook. To adjust the height of the flame, locate (if you can) the surface-control screw on the gas delivery tube to the burner. Turn this stove control screw clockwise to increase the length of the flame. Turning this screw counterclockwise will lower the flame.
REPAIRING A STOVE BURNER PILOT
PROBLEM: One of the stove pilots on your gas range is out. You relight it with a match, but it constantly needs relighting.
If your gas stove doesn't have spark igniters, the burners are ignited by a gas-fed pilot. In some stoves, each burner has its own pilot in others, two burners share a pilot. If the pilot doesn't get enough gas, the pilot will keep going out. Turn the pilot adjustment screw counterclockwise at a time, using a screwdriver or an adjustable wrench. If the pilot won't stay lit, call a utility company or independent stove repair technician to make the repair
